Quick answer
Mastery is the troop’s progression, separate from account level, rarity and Ascension. Dated guides report that using the unit in battles builds its level and that level 20 is the evolution gate for units with a listed route.

Read the right progression system
| System | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Unit level / Mastery | Is this troop ready for its next listed evolution? |
| Account level | What account features or loadout limits can you access? |
| Ascension | Can compatible duplicate units merge? |
| Rarity / stars | What is the troop’s current rarity or loadout cost? |
| Skill Tree | Which node effects have you purchased for this unit? |
A troop can be ascended without satisfying its unit-level requirement. A levelled troop can also have no further evolution. Start with the unit name and route, not the largest number on your account.
A practical battle-to-evolution routine
- Pick one troop with a documented next stage and write down its current Mastery or unit level.
- Equip that troop in a legal loadout, then use it in battles. Eurogamer describes battle use as the route to unit experience.
- Keep frontline, ranged and counter coverage so you can contribute to objectives while training the chosen slot.
- After a completed match, compare the same unit’s progress before changing your army.
- At the reported level 20 milestone, open Evolve and inspect the current output and requirements.
This is a planning routine, not a tested fastest-XP route. Quest rewards described simply as XP do not establish how much unit Mastery you receive. Avoid attributing account XP gains to the troop without checking its own panel.
Choose a useful first target
| Your army needs | Documented route |
|---|---|
| Defensive screen | Shieldman → Sentinel → Imperial Wall |
| Protected ranged pressure | Archer → Longbowman → Flaming Archers |
| Mounted flank | Scout Rider → Cavalryman → Lancer |
| Anti-cavalry slot | Spear Militia → Spear Vanguard |
| Ranged support | Javelineer → Elite Javelineer |
Our recommendation is to finish a troop you regularly deploy. A rare unit sitting unused in the collection is not a better training target merely because its card has more stars.
When Mastery seems stuck
Check that the card belongs to the unit you actually used, and distinguish a unit-level display from account progress. Record a before-and-after value around a completed battle. If the number does not move, keep the exact display and current server conditions rather than inventing an hourly rate.
The September X2 XP Weekend is historical coverage. Its old title does not prove an event is active today or that every category of XP is doubled. The October AFK Server is also a separate system; this site has not measured a guaranteed Mastery payout from it.
What to do at the milestone
Inspect the next form and preview before confirming, then review the result’s fit within your Star Limit. Do not assume Mastery resets or transfers in a particular way: check the actual result before planning another stage. Protect duplicates for Ascension and budget Skill Crystals separately.
